SudBud

SudBud was my team's submission to the 2021 Make OH/IO Makeathon and winner of the "Most Innovative" and "Biohack" awards.

The Challenge

This project stemmed from a challenge presented at the Make OH/IO 2021 Makeathon. As with a typical hackathon, this chalenge presented teams with numerous potential challenges for teams to choose from and 48 hours in which to conceptualize, plan, design, construct, and program a project. My team's submission was named SudBud and was centered around the challenge of preventing infectious disease spread in hospital settings.

Our Design

SudBud, your "Suds Buddy", was aimed at attempting to solve the problem of people not washing their hands in medical settings. Our design hinged around the idea that compliance could be greatly improved if there was (1) a visual reminder to wash your hands, (2) a timed hand-washing cycle, and (3) a compliance check that could be read from all devices into a compliance dashboard. These three objectives were acomplished with an arduino controlled device that could detect your presence and give visual directions. Upon walking by, the user would be prompted to wash their hands. While washing their hands a foot pedal would be depressed that cued a countdown on the device mounted above a sink. Based on the user's ability to follow the timed cycle, an incomplete or complete wash could then be logged into a database. Completing this project in under 48 hours was a monumental challenge but was rewarded with my team's winning of multiple prizes.
